Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball relied on an overpowering defense to earn their third win of the season Thursday against Roberts Wesleyan University's JV team.

The Spartans dictated the game from the opening tip, surrendering just two points in the first quarter en route to a 51-31 win. Cayuga is now 3-4 on the season.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici praised the Spartans' balanced attack on offense and their defense, which forced more than 20 turnovers in the contest.

"Our defense was great tonight. We always have a chance to win because of how well we play on that end of the court," said Alberici. "We have some work to do on offense, but we shared the ball very well tonight and that got us some good looks at the basket."

Cayuga wasted no time building an early advantage, racing out to a 15-2 first quarter lead fueled by forced turnovers and fast-break layups. The Spartans stayed in control in the second quarter and led 29-11 at the break.

The Spartans' defense continued dominating in the third and fourth quarters, surrendering only four points to the Red Hawks in the third quarter while their offense built the lead to more than 20 points.

Lamontiona Johnson and Lexi Alberici led the Spartans' offense with 12 points apiece, with Johnson grabbing six rebounds and Alberici connecting on four three-pointers. Haley Mosch finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Avrey Colton filled the stat sheet with 11 assists, nine points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Madison Auxier added six points and three rebounds.

The Spartans are on the road Saturday, Dec. 2, at Genesee Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
