A slow start didn't stop Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball from picking up another home win Wednesday against Genesee Community College.

Haley Mosch and Maddy Weed propelled the Spartans past the Cougars in the third and fourth quarters en route to a 38-24 win for Cayuga. The win should secure the Spartans a place in the Mid-State Athletic Conference Tournament at the end of the regular season.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the team was out of rhythm on the offensive end in the first half, but better shooting in the second half and a consistent defensive effort earned them the win.

"We definitely didn't play our best game, but these are hard games to win. We had a lot of good looks in the first two quarters, but they weren't falling for us," said Alberici. "But holding a team to 24 points is great. We've played good defense all year."

Defenses from both teams dominated the first two quarters, preventing either team from shooting well from the field. Several late baskets in the second quarter helped the Spartans take a slim 12-10 lead into the break.

Mosch and Weed took over in the third quarter, scoring 14 of the Spartans' 16 points in the frame to put Cayuga up eight going into the fourth quarter. The Spartans' defense took over from there, holding the Cougars to just four points in the final quarter.

Weed led all scorers with 13 points, with Mosch finishing with 11. Weed grabbed six rebounds and three steals, while Mosch had 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Avrey Colton added eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Spartans are now 5-5 in conference play and 7-9 overall. Cayuga is back home Saturday, January 27, to host Hudson Valley Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
