Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball played well in the second half but couldn't catch one of the stronger teams in Region III on Wednesday.

The Spartans stayed close through the first quarter with Jefferson Community College but fell 81-53 to the second-place team in the region. Cayuga is now 8-11 on the season and 6-9 in regional competition.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said they knew this would be a challenging game against a good Jefferson team.

"We knew this would be a tough game. We had a lot of good looks at the basket in the first two quarters, and we got frustrated at times when some shots didn't fall," he said. "In the third and fourth quarters we shot a lot better and we basically played them even. Hopefully we can pull some confidence from that."

Jefferson ran out to an early lead, but the Spartans stayed close and trailed by seven entering the second quarter. Cayuga's offense struggled in the quarter, though, and the Cannoneers led 39-14 at halftime.

The Cannoneers stayed in front throughout the third and fourth quarters, but the Spartans shot much better from the field and were only outscored by three points across the last two frames.

Avrey Colton led the Spartans with 17 points and added six assists and four rebounds. Lamontiona Johnson had 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Haley Mosch had nine points and four rebounds. Maddy Weed also had six assists for Cayuga.

Cayuga is on the road Sunday, Feb. 4, at North Country Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
