Pioneers take down Spartans 8-0

Pioneers take down Spartans 8-0

The Alfred State Pioneers dominated the 90 minutes of play this afternoon against the Lady Spartans, outshooting them 60-2, in route to an 8-0 victory.  The depleted Spartans were once again forced to play 8 v 11 due to continued nagging injuries.  Bre Becker continued her stellar play with 41 saves on the day.  Lynsey Potter and Hannah Sessler had their best outing for the season, with Brooke Mayville continuing her high level of consistency for the entire 90 minutes.  Kali Hasbrouck, the Spartans lone striker in their 3-3-1 formation was outstanding on all 50/50 balls in the middle third of the field and was able to take on the back three for the Pioneers with a flurry of individual moves.  In the end fatigue and playing down scenarios were just too much to remain in the match for the Spartans.

Coach Renaud, despited the lopsided score, was optimistic about the match.  "You never like to be completely dominated in a match, but given the circumstances, I thought the girls did a fantastic job of keeping their heads up, staying positive and playing hard the entire 90 minutes.  At halftime we made an adjustment to assigning each player to a specific zone through our middle and defensive thirds, allowing the Pioneers to attack but not overcommitting once they approached scoring areas, and it worked well for the majority of the final 45 minutes.  We were not going to the keep them off the scoreboard, but we maintained great shape, had nice support when one of was beat and can use this as another component to build upon as our season progresses."

The ladies next play at Erie on Tuesday, 10/2 at 3 p.m.
